Viennese hard felt mallet or "Viennese microphone mallet" (WM)
The Viennese hard felt mallet (also called the Viennese microphone mallet) is an invention by Gerald Fromme. Insiders also call this lower-priced alternative to the Viennese flannel mallet "micro", since in the recording process, direct miking of the timpani sound produced with this mallet material is particularly transparent yet full-toned in reproduction.
In the concert hall, this mallet sounds slim and transparent, though not thin. The "micro" works extremely well on plastic and calfskin heads.
Through a special fulling process, the two slightly softer models WM4 and WM6 are noted for their very good articulation in the lower dynamic range and a smooth, elegant sound in the middle to high dynamic range – thus a classic "two-tone" mallet.
