This model, familiar in Vienna in the days of Richard Hochrainer (member of the Vienna Philharmonic 1939 - 1970), was frequently used by my predecessors in the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic.
In recent decades, new models essentially different from the "Hochrainer stick" in form and weight distribution were devised to fulfil the increasingly complex demands of the percussion section in the orchestra. Regrettably, the result was that this wonderful stick was wellnigh neglected.
The conical form and the resultant special balance shift of the "new Viennese" model allow a very delicate touch in the ppp - mp range. Even in the louder dynamic range, the "new Viennese" model remains poised and restrained, blending admirably with the orchestral sound. Despite the necessary stronger pressure, the press roll still has a light and delicate sound. With this model, grace notes can be lightly phrased with ease.
I am very much looking forward to reintroducing the "new Viennese" model, particularly in works from the Strauss dynasty. In combination with the typical Viennese goatskin head, the lightness and flexibility of the stick make it perfect for this light, colourful style of music.
